A Lone Tree Remembered is a portrait of my father, who lived with dementia.
After his death, I was drawn to photographing the reflection of a solitary tree.. I didn't know why. What I saw was the tree's essence rather than its detail. Recognisable, but incomplete, it was constantly changing, omitting information, yet still the tree. I recognised my father in this. The tree became him; its reflection, his memory.
The tree itself seldom enters the frame. At times it can be found beneath its reflection: out of reach, but there. And rarely, it can be seen whole and clear.
The colour of each photograph follows his mood. Some days were dark; some were distant and cold. On others there was warmth.
As his memory fragmented, he remained my father.
